What is Estate Jewelry?

Estate jewelry is distinguished by having had a prior owner. Contrary to the notion that estate jewelry only applies to pieces of jewelry from deceased owners, estate jewelry may originate from a person who is still alive. Age is not a factor in defining estate jewelry, despite the fact that many of the pieces available today are quite old, as much as a century and a half.

Jewelry that has a past owner, be they living or dead, is classified as estate jewelry. Whether the previous owner is living or deceased is not a factor in determining what is considered “estate jewelry.” Even newer items of jewelry can be classified as estate jewelry if it has had a prior owner. Although, experienced dealers tend to only use the term for pieces that are within the last 30 to 50 years. Additionally, older items of jewelry that could be over a century old can also be labeled as estate jewelry.
